Racing Season off to a rolling start!

Updated: Mar 27, 2019

As the sun comes out, so too it would appear do excellent results for UoNSCC! This weekend saw a huge range of racing, and members have done the club proud with some wonderful results!

BUCS Team Time Trial is the first of several BUCS events over the coming months (TTs, DH MTB and RR) and UoN had a strong turnout with 4 teams in total, two male and two female, all four of which saw Top 10 positions. The Men’s A team was on course for a course record before a puncture robbed them of the victory! They still crossed the line in an admirable 4th place! The women’s A team put in a solid ride to come 6th overall and both B teams came in 10th rounding off a great series of rides. These results give UoNCC another 10 BUCS points, taking the total to 90, our highest ever!

This weekend was also the opening round of the East Midlands Road Race League(EMRRL), and was organised and run by UoNCC in partnership with Leisure Lakes Bikes. This is the first time the club has run an event on this level and is hopefully an indicator of even more engagement with the region in coming months and years.

With a field of 75 riders on a flat route, it was a fast, hard race, with many riders dropping out within the first two laps! From the first lap Seb Garry clipped off the front with 2 breakaway companions. After 2 laps Seb was alone and managed to stretch the gap to 90 seconds. The bunch continued to chase but did not make much of an impression on time gap. Alex Pritchard, Michael Gill and Tim Jones controlled the bunch and rode well throughout. On the penultimate lap two riders broke from the bunch and bridged across. The small break managed to keep the bunch at bay just long enough, with the podium decided by a 3-man sprint. Kudos to Seb for staying off the front for the majority of the race and still managing to sprint for second! Despite working tirelessly in the bunch, Alex Pritchard managed to sprint with the bunch to take 11th overall. These results put Seb and Alex at 1st and 7th respectively in the EMRRL results and UoNSCC is currently leading the Team League! A big thanks to all to helps marshal!

There were also various individual successes. Joe Perkins broke the course record to take gold at the Sherwood 20mile TT, Josie Harcourt raced her first 10mile TT and Laura Owler gurned some excellent gurns to come in 17th in the Mag7. Congratulations to all of them, and we hope more great results will follow!

There are plenty more races coming up. We have a range of BUCS events, but there are also EMRRL and EMMR events, with Crits and Road Races based around the region. If you are keen to know more about racing and how to get involved, please speak to our Road Captain, Emily Walton. Otherwise, keep riding and make the most of the glorious weather we currently have!

From all of the committee and from myself, best of luck with the rest of the season!
